COUPE CANADA RETURNS TO MONTREAL

Arena soccer in the great outdoors returns to Canada on Tuesday as the Coupe Canada Soccer Rapide Montreal 2009 returns to Quays of the Old Port Montreal.

The Coupe Canada will feature four national teams, one more than last year’s Circuit Mondial that saw Mexico defeat Canada in the championship. This year the US, Mexico, and Canada will be joined by Peru, expanding the lineup and extending the tournament to a second day.

This is the third FIFRA national team event and Mexico is again the team to beat. The Mexican Futbol Rapido squad is 6-0 in international play, winning the Circuit Mondial and the Torneo Internacional de Futbol Rapido in 2008.

Mexico, however, will be without Genoni Martinez and Byron Alvarez in Montreal, creating an opportunity for the US, Canada, or Peru to break through.

The US brings a revamped roster that has more experience than past teams, but lacks Bernie Lilavois and Greg Howes, the two leading scorers through the USNAST's first 6 international games.

In their place is new player/coach Craig Rhodis, PASL-Pro All-League goalkeeper Craig Salvati, and a roster where the scoring will me more evenly distributed. Aaron Susi will be their top offensive threat, but the entire lineup is capable of producing offensively. The USNAST is 2-4.

Canada is again led by longtime NPSL veteran Darko Kolic, who had 8 goals and 1 assist in 2 games at least year's Circuit Mondial, and Cristian Nunez, this year's leading scorer in the QCSL.

Peru returns 8 players from the squad that finished fourth in the Torneo Internactional de Futbol Rapido Monterrey. Though they went 1-3, they suffered two losses by just a goal and their one win came against soccer powerhouse Brazil.
